These are the memoirs of the US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during World War I, abridged for this production in order to focus on the mass deportations and systematic killings of Turkey's Armenian population. This work is a renowned primary source for this Armenian Genocide, a crime since recognized by 29 countries. Ambassador Morgenthau Story (Audible Audio Edition) Henry Morgenthau Jack Chekijian Spoken Realms Books Reviews

First person account of the Armenian Genocide. Very well written. Has illustrations as well. Makes one wonder how this event can be denied.
The book was exciting and eye opening. It makes so much of what is happening today much clearer by understanding the make up of the character of the leaders of that time in that part of the world. Beautifully written.
A wonderful and personal chronique of his period as ambassador of the USA in Turkey, before and during the FIrst World War. A way to understad the Balkans history and the Rmenian genocide
A very interesting background for similar events taking place in the same area today. It left me sad, considering all his efforts and temporary successes- it shows that even with all his efforts not much changed. A lesson, perhaps we need to learn today. The differences between Western & Eastern mentality are huge.
I had no idea that Germany was established in Turkey 4 years before WWI, training troops, supplying them with weapons, building railroads, etc. They were planning on starting a war, with Turkey as its ally, that early.

I was also surprised to learn that the organization of the deportations of the Armenian Christians was a German invention, that was perfected in WWII against the Jews. This book should be required reading in any class that teaches WWI history.
I was very disappointed that the version of this book had no drawings or pictures available in the version.

All of the drawings referenced were not visible...a real shame!
I loved this book! I found and read it after finishing Chris Bohjalian's very disappointing "Sandcastle Girls", which was purportedly about the Armenian genocide but in my opinion just used the genocide as a sensational backdrop for a little love story. That book did not begin to explain why the Turks decided to massacre their Armenian people, nor provide any meaningful, larger historical context. In "Ambassador Morgenthau's Story" we get that in spades! It is so refreshing to read a "primary source", without the hindsight, simplification of facts, and possible distortion of the record that you get from a more recent, second-hand historical account. US ambassador Morgenthau is a delightful writer, full of wit and sensitivity. He also reflects both the formality of his times (referring to his daughter as Mrs. so-and-so, never calling her by her first name) and the informality of diplomacy in the pre-WWI period. For example, he describes himself strolling about Constantinople with other nations' diplomats and running over to the homes of the Turkish national leaders at any hour that he felt the need to confer with them. His many conversations with these leaders are bluntly recorded, and his opinions of other ambassadors are refreshingly honest. I am not a historian, but to me the most fascinating point that Morgenthau makes repeatedly is that the German government backed and supported the Turkish leaders in their efforts to exterminate the Armenians. I have read other sources which point to the Nazis' subsequently using the Armenian genocide as a prototype for their own extermination of the Jews, but I did not appreciate how closely the Germans worked with the Turks during the 1913-16 period to ensure that the Armenian genocide could occur without European powers' intervention. It is also shocking to think about the US government remaining "neutral" during the whole period of the genocide, in spite of Morgenthau's pleading in vain with Turkish leaders to stop their heinous policies as well as his reporting back to the US President about what was happening. I could not put this book down and am so happy that I stumbled across it. Enjoy!
